Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: 23rd General Hospital 53rd Station Hospital; 312th Field Artillery Regiment; Camp Meade Base Hospital; Walter Reed General Hospital; 6th Quartermaster (QM) Training Regiment. General description of the collection: John G. Knauer papers includes Army Medical Corps. Materials pertaining to Dr. Knauer's career in the Army Medical Corps, 1917-1953, and private practice in Pennsylvania. Many items relate to his command of the 23rd General Hospital in Maryland; Virginia; North Africa; Italy; France and Germany during WWII: reports; histories; tables; rosters; official and personal correspondence; diaries and clippings. Official histories of the 53rd Station Hospital, which was consolidated with the 23rd in 1944, are also available. Official documents for his earlier service with the 312th Field Artillery Regiment and the Base Hospital at Camp Meade during WWI and also for his inter-war service at Fort Riley; Fort Totten; Fitzsimons General Hospital, the Philippines; the Canal Zone and Walter Reed General Hospital are found. His post WWII duty with the occupation forces in Berlin, 1945-1946, at Brooke, and Valley Forge General Hospitals is also covered. Additional material concerning him includes clippings; capsule biographies and copies of his professional writings. Other family member papers include his wife, Rosalia (diary, 1933), and his son Karl, a private in the 6th Quartermaster Training Regiment (correspondence, 1942). Also available are correspondence and miscellaneous papers of Colonel John H. Stutesman.
